Donald Trump’s presidency was characterized with lots of drama as he sought to stamp his electoral pledge of “America First” and “Making America Great Again.” As his term comes to a tumultuous halt, Trump will be remembered as the first president in a century and the fourth in American history to snub his successor’s inauguration event.
Just as his presidency was extraordinary, his handing over of power has been equally controversial as he failed to ensure smooth transition of power. The failure to acknowledge Biden’s victory was evident when he denied him access to White House ahead of his inauguration.
He also made history as the first US President to be impeached twice. The congress impeached Trump on January 2021 due to incitement to insurrection, where he allegedly ordered his supporters to storm the US capitol and interrupt with the congress session that had been convened to certify the win of Joe Biden.
The outgoing US President would go down the annals of world history as a person who was extraordinarily outspoken, with nothing to fear about as he sought to ‘protect the interests of Americans.’ He consistently declined to accept defeat, posting his persistent complains on Twitter.
Giant social media networks had to ban him from their platform, citing his posts as an infringement to their policies. The never-say-die trump would later blame big tech companies, threatening to launch his own social media platform.
During his tenure as president, Trump was in constant loggerheads with the media, terming their reports as ‘fake news.’
The incoming US President Joe Biden has promised to reverse some of the policies that were implemented by Trump. These among others include: the reverse on Paris Climate Deal, reverse travel ban to some Muslim Countries and to return US to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Trump family has broken the tradition of presidential transition. The First Lady Melanie Trump broke the tradition of showing her successor around the White House; instead she chose to issue an emotive speech acknowledging her stint as the First Lady of The United States of America.
Additionally, Biden has vowed to stem his fight against coronavirus. Covid-19 pandemic has been more prevalent in the US than any other country in the world, and has recorded the highest number of fatalities. Statistically, US deaths account to 20 percent of the total number of people who have died of Covid-19 globally.
