Little Known Facts about Former UNCTAD Secretary-General, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi

Dr Mukhisa Kituyi was first cousin to the late former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa. His father, the late Jamin Kituyi was a brother to Wamalwa’s mother Esther Nekesa. Mukhisa grew up in a not so well-endowed family in Bungoma North Sub-county in a village called Mbakalo.  Mukhisa is married to Dr. Ling Kituyi, a Norwegian, and initially had four children namely Ivar Makari (deceased), Laila Kituyi, Sitati Kituyi and Thor Masalule. His eldest son Makari died of diabetes in 2015.  The former Kimilili legislature graduated with a BA degree in Political science at Makerere University, before he furthered his studies by undertaking a post-graduate course in Norway. He was expelled from Nairobi University before he sought educational asylum at Makerere. After months of speculations as to whether he would contest for presidency in Kenya, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi has finally made a reality and resigned from the lucrative secretary-general of the United Nations Convention on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), wading back into the murky waters of politics. The former three-term Kimilili MP has a wealth of experience. Apart from being an MP and an international diplomat, Dr Kituyi also served as Trade and Industry Minister in the Kibaki government . He lost his parliamentary seat in 2007 to, then a political novice, Dr Eseli Simiyu . He later on unsuccessfully contested for Bungoma Senatorial seat in 2013, which he lost to Ford Kenya Party leader Moses Wetangula. Mukhisa who is 65 years of age was appointed by former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as UNCTAD’s secretary-general on September 1, 2013. He was then reappointed for a second time in September 2017.  Dr Mukhisa Kituyi might succeed Uhuru Kenyatta as the president of Kenya.
