Microsoft president Brad Smith stated that the firm is dedicated to Australian news publishers. Smith further revealed that he was in full support of the News Media Bargaining Code. Microsoft is set to seal the loophole created by Google giant search engine, over its decision to ban its site from Australian access.
According to the bargaining code, the Australian government created mandatory rules to bridge the gap between Australian news media and digital platforms such as Facebook and Google. The Bill was tabled in Australian parliament on 9 December 2020.
Google, through its Managing Director for Google Australia Mel Silva, expressed the firm’s position about the new law. Silva stated through a blog post on Google that: “The Code would break the way Google search functions and the fundamental principle of the internet, by forcing us to pay to provide links to new businesses’ sites.”
Both Google and Facebook were unable to stamp their authority of reversing the Australian proposed mandatory news bargaining code. The Companies have threatened to limit their services in the country, when the laws are fully enforced.
Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison paraded Microsoft and its search engine Bing at the National Press Club, signifying a shift of focus to Google-equivalent search engines. This was after a meeting with Microsoft chief executive officer Satya Nadella.
