Edge computing is fast gaining traction as most companies adapt to operating smaller data centers. The main aim of edge computing is to bring the hosting services closer to its potential users. The technology revolving around Edge computing is morphing as cloud and data centers development advances.
The deployments of 5G fast wireless and Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets require the disposition of networks that would necessitate computation and data analytics close to where data is developed. Edge computing enables real-time computing power with the assistance of 5G wireless.
Self-driving cars, robotics, artificial intelligence, analytics and video processing are run by real-time applications. Edge devices include IoT sensor, latest smartphone, security camera or internet-connected microwave.
Wikipedia, the largest online encyclopedia describes Edge Computing as “a distributed computing model that moves data storage and computation closer to the place where it is required.” It originated from content delivery networks, which were developed in the late 1990’s.
The original edge network served both the web and video content from edge-based servers that were specifically deployed near its users. The network, then, evolved to host applications on edge servers. Its first commercial services were hosting applications like shopping carts, ad insertion engine, dealer locators and real-time data aggregators.
