President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to retire in 2022 after the completion of his two-term stint as Kenya’s CEO. His deputy William Samoei Ruto and opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga are among the frontline politicians in the 2022 presidential battle.
According to media reports a clique of Uhuru’s confidantes are out to scuttle his dalliance with Raila in a bid to block his ascendance to power. Recently, Siaya Senator James Orengo accused some anonymous civil servants who are out to hijack the BBI process with succession battle.
Reports indicate that Uhuru’s allies are of the view that KANU party leader Gideon Moi and his ANC counterpart Musalia Mudavadi are best suited to succeed Uhuru. The behind-the-curtain scenes backfired when Raila’s cronies blew the whistle of the political under-deals.
Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho is believed to behind the move to shape Uhuru’s succession politics. Apart from Ruto, Raila and Mudavadi, the presidential seat has also attracted former UNCTAD secretary general Dr Mukhisa Kituyi, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Ali Hassan Joho (Mombasa governor), Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya (Kakamega governor) and Alfred Nganga Mutua (Machakos governor) among others.
Should Uhuru renege in his treaty with Raila, then he risks the combined efforts of the enraged ODM and UDA-allied leaders in sabotaging the government’s agenda.
When Orengo and Otiende Amollo spilled the shocking revelation of succession intrigues, State House handlers were quick to reach out to Raila and managed to avert possible fallout between the president and the opposition leader.
Probably, Uhuru is keener to contain Raila Odinga than building bridges with his deputy. Since the president closed ranks with ODM boss, he is at peace in advancing the government’s agenda both within and outside parliament.
