ODM has publicized the names of those individuals who submitted their applications for nomination as the Party’s presidential candidate in the 2022 general elections. In a statement that was dispatched on Thursday morning, the party revealed that three applicants managed to beat the extended deadline to submit their applications.
Raila Amollo Odinga will compete with Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya for the ODM presidential nomination contest.
In a letter signed by the party’s chairperson of the National Election Board, Catherine Muyeka, the message was, “The NEB shall scrutinize the three applications, vet the candidates as required by the ODM Elections and Nomination Rules and subsequent thereto announce next processes and timetable in accordance with the ODM constitution.”
On January 21, 2021 NEB declared the start of the process of nominating the Party’s presidential flag bearer. Interested persons, who meet the required qualifications and standards set by ODM constitution and the Constitution of Kenya, were encouraged to forward their applications by February 26. The deadline was later extended to March 31.
This is the second time that ODM has announced the process. The first one occurred in 2007, when Raila Odinga faced Musalia Mudavadi, William Ruto, Najib Balala and the late Joseph Nyaga. Later on, Balala bolted out and threw his weight behind Raila, who emerged the winner.
