Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has officially released the 2020 KCSE examination results. The results were released on Monday after the conclusion of the marking exercise on May 7, 2021. Marking began immediately after the completion of the exam on April 16.
Around 752,891 students were examined this year, after the disruption of the school calendar caused by Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020 KCSE Examination was done in 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Magoha briefed President Uhuru Kenyatta about the results ahead of the official release at State House, Nairobi. The State House briefing was also attended by Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua, Early Learning and Basic Education PS Julius Jwan, KNEC acting CEO Mercy Karogo and TSC boss Nancy Macharia.
Uhuru used the occasion to congratulate the 2020 KCSE candidates for exemplary performance, despite the raging Covid-19 global pandemic. He also acknowledged the education stakeholders for the flawless administration of the examinations.
The event also manifested the swearing in of Prof. Fatuma Chege as the Principal Secretary in charge of curriculum reforms and implementation.
The marking process was marred by complains over poor pay and delayed allowances. The release of the exam coincided with the reopening of schools. Learners resumed studies for the third term on Monday.
The current term will terminate on July 16, 2021. On Friday Prof Magoha advised Grade 4 learners to stay at home till next academic year, which is scheduled to begin on July 26. 2020 KCPE candidates will join Form One on July 26.
2020 KCSE Results at a Glance
893 students scored a mean grade of A (plain) as compared to 627 in 2019. 143,140 candidates attained the minimum university entry grade of C+.
Top student nationally in KCSE is Robinson Simiyu Wanjala of Murang’a High School. He scored a mean mark of 87.334. He was followed by Wasonga Allan, then Sharon Terer.
According to the Education CS, 19 subjects recorded significant improvement.
The announcement by the Ministry of Education will pave way for admission to universities, colleges and other tertiary institutions.
Measures to Curb Examination Fraud
Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has introduced new measures to curtail examination malpractices. The process will involve the usage of fingerprints to capture details of every teacher registered by TSC.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia revealed how teachers used their mobile phones to capture details of the examination material and submitted via social messaging applications like Whatsapp.
Ms Macharia used the occasion to applaud teachers who had taken the Covid-19 jab. She expressed her impression on the high rate of vaccine intake among teachers.

2020 KCSE results can be accessed by sending the candidate’s index number to code 20076. The message costs Kshs. 25.
