Investment prospects in Kenya: Leverage your income with the money Game

Most Kenyans with ambitious plans invest their non-disposable income in buying shares and stocks from top-rated companies.

Available Investment Opportunities

  1. Investing in stocks:  For example in Kenya you can devote your capital in the Nairobi Stock Exchange Market (NSE). Stock Market is undoubtedly one of the greatest wealth creation tools. One can open a Central Depository System (CDS) account to facilitate the process of purchasing and transferring shares that can be traded at the stock exchange.

CDS account can be opened with a stock broker or on phone through AIB Digi and G-Kuze trading apps. Alternatively, CDS account can be opened with your bank as most financial institutions offer brokerage services.

Commercial Banks are eligible for application of a CDS account directly at the Central Bank of Kenya.

In 2016, CDS unveiled a system that enables investors to securely track their shares portfolio using their mobile phones.

How to choose the right stock broker

  • Technology: The world has shifted focus to making life better and with tech devices such as phones, you should be able to access your trading account via your phone.

  • Investment charges: Opt for stock brokers with low costs as most of them charge different costs.

  • Customer Service: Opt for brokers with good public relations.

  • Regulation: Make sure that your broker is authorized by CDSC and regulated by Capital Markets Authority (CMA).

After opening a CDS account, you can choose your preferred stock broker and the securities you want to trade at NSE. Do some research before buying any shares to avoid losses, as investments in stock market attracts greater risks.

  1. Money Market Funds: This is a type of mutual fund used by investors to purchase cash and cash equivalent securities. In short, MMFs are short-term debt funds, with high liquidity level. Investors seeking to meet their short-term goals opt for this investment plan.

Companies offering Money Market Funds (MMFs) in Kenya include UAP Old Mutual, Cyton, Madison Group, Zimele MMF, CiC Group MMF, ICEA lion MM, Genghis Capital MMF, Britam MMF, Sanlam MMF and Apollo MMF.

What to be considered before investing in MMF

Consider the Management charges, minimum subscription, minimum investment, accessibility of funds, customer care service and the processes of depositing and making withdrawals.

  1. Invest in treasury bills and bonds: Treasury Bills are debt management tools issued by the Central Bank of Kenya on behalf of the government.

Investing in government equities is one of the strategies used for debt management and buying treasury bonds means you are loaning the government with the expectation to earn interest on repayment.

Treasury bonds are risk-free and offer better returns to the investor. Government securities are classified into: Treasury Bills and Treasury Bonds.

  1. Invest in US equities from Kenya: A Kenyan investor can invest in US stocks through Hisa App. With as low as $5, one can get some share of top companies like Google, Amazon and Tesla.

Why Matiang'i comeback threatens Ruto's re-election bid

Former Interior cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i is a great rival to President William Ruto in his 2027 re-election contest. Matiang'i is set to give Ruto a run for his money, owing to his track record as a cabinet secretary in the previous regime.  Former President Uhuru Kenyatta trusted Matiang'i more than any other cabinet secretary due to his workaholic nature and might be forced to finance his presidential quest.  The former Interior CS is reportedly eyeing the presidential seat on a Jubilee ticket, as alluded by the party's secretary general Jeremiah Kioni.
