Astronaut Ron Garan spent 178 aboard the ISS and came with a powerful realization that revealed how human beings were living a lie.
His experience on space transformed his perspective, disclosing the interconnection of life and the need for global corperation.
Ron Garan overview effect
While in space, he noted that the Earth looks united, with a conspicuous glistening blue sphere devoid of borders nor divisions.
However he perceived a fragile home floating in darkness. The irony down, humans live in separation by virtue of tribe, race, politics and nations.
From the orbit, Garan saw a fragile atmosphere, with a narrow blue veil protecting living things, auroras dangling across the poles and lighting storms flashing like strobe lights.
According to Garan, humanity has placed its priorities upside down, where the economy is prioritized first.
He argues that planet should come first, followed by society then economy.
The Earth should be regarded as shared spaceship, where everyone is crew, and not passengers.
From his perception about the Earth from space, Garan revealed that global challenges such as deforestation, global warming and loss of biodiversity are not the root problem, but rather symptoms of a deeper, flawed mindset.
These problems arise due to failure of identification of humans as a planetary species.
In summary, the survival of humanity should be cognizant of the fact that what divides us on the ground is invisible from space.
