Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is on the brink of collapse, just months after the death of former Party Leader Raila Odinga.
ODM enters a turbulent transition phase under its current Party Leader Dr Oburu Oginga, as it plans to enter into a structured pre-election pact with the ruling UDA Party.
However the Orange Party is grappling with internal divisions and wrangles, with a section of leaders led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna being against the broad-based government arrangement, with president William Ruto.
On January 12 2026, the ODM Party Central Management Committee endorsed Oburu Oginga to lead pre-election coalition negotiations with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Seemingly, ODM is eyeing for the running mate position and increased cabinet slots.
There's increased pressure for a National Delegates Conference (NDC) to resolve leadership disputes.
Brief History of ODM
Orange for Democratic Movement (ODM) was formed in 2005 during the constitutional referendum campaign.
Orange was a sign for those who were opposed to the draft constitution while Banana was a symbol for those who were in favour of the Wako draft constitution.
The Orange team triumphed in the 2005 national plebiscite. Later on, a Party was crafted out of the Orange team and christened as Orange Democratic Movement.
The Party was historically led by Raila Amolo Odinga, until his demise on October 15 2025.
Raila had build the Party into a formidable force championing for social democracy, inclusive governance, devolution and Justice for all.
The death of Raila left ODM vulnerable to political scavengers.
