President Ruto appoints Ida Odinga as Permanent Representative to UNEP
President William Ruto has appointed Ida Odinga as Kenya's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Ida is the widow of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. This role will position her at the heart of global environmental discussions, focusing on climate change, sustainable development, and environmental governance. The nomination is pending parliamentary approval and is expected to strengthen Kenya's influence in global environmental policy.
Ida Odinga brings a wealth of experience to the role, with a background in education and a long history of advocating for social justice, gender equity, and women's empowerment. She's a respected educationist, civic leader, and has held leadership roles in family-owned businesses, including East African Spectre, a liquefied gas cylinder manufacturing company.
