Changes in Azimio Coalition Leadership as Kalonzo Musyoka appointed Party Leader

As of February 3, 2026, the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party has undergone significant leadership changes amid internal realignments, resignations, and efforts to address post-2022 election challenges and opposition dynamics.

Key recent developments include:

1. Appointment of Kalonzo Musyoka as new party leader:

During a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta (the coalition's chairperson), Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka was appointed as the new party leader of Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party.

This marks a major shift in the coalition's top leadership structure.

2. Replacement of Secretary General:

Suba South MP Caroli Omondi has taken over as secretary general, replacing Suna East MP Junet Mohammed.

This change follows earlier internal pressures and calls (notably in January 2026) from some affiliate parties for Junet Mohammed's removal from leadership roles, citing concerns over conduct, credibility, and alleged undermining of the coalition.

3. Resignation of Executive Director Raphael Tuju:

On or around February 2-3, 2026, former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju resigned as executive director of the coalition.

He formally notified Chairman Uhuru Kenyatta and handed over duties to Philip Kisia, who has been appointed as the new executive director.

These shifts come against a backdrop of ongoing scrutiny and uncertainty within Azimio:

The National Liberal Party (NLP), a founding member had petitioned the Registrar of Political Parties, seeking clarity on the coalition's legal status, leadership structure, membership (including parties that have exited), governing organs, and finances—particularly funds from the Political Parties Fund linked to the 2022 election performance.

This highlights concerns over transparency, internal cohesion, and resource management amid reported leadership gaps.

Earlier tensions (from late 2025 into early 2026) included calls for Junet Mohammed's exit and broader debates on the coalition's direction following the death of former leader Raila Odinga (implied in prior contexts), exits by parties like NARC-Kenya (Martha Karua), and realignments involving figures like Kalonzo Musyoka.

The coalition, originally formed ahead of the 2022 elections and registered as a coalition political party, continues under Uhuru Kenyatta's chairmanship.

These changes appear aimed at injecting new energy and addressing divisions, though they have drawn external criticism and questions about Azimio's future cohesion ahead of potential 2027 preparations.

No major further appointments or resignations were reported immediately after the February 3 NEC meeting.

The situation remains fluid, with affiliate parties and observers watching for Uhuru Kenyatta's next steps to unify the group.
