ODM approves Oburu Oginga as a substantive Party Leader

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially confirmed Dr. Oburu Oginga as the party's new leader.

This follows the death of his brother, the late Raila Odinga, who previously held the position.

Key details:

1. Oburu was initially appointed as acting/interim party leader in October 2025 by the National Executive Council (NEC) after Raila's passing.

2. The appointment was ratified by the party's National Governing Council (NGC) in November 2025.

3. The Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) issued a Gazette notice (No. 1157, dated January 19, 2026) officially confirming the leadership changes, including Oburu as the substantive party leader.

This has been widely reported in recent Kenyan media as of early February 2026.

Recent reports (from sources like People Daily and social media posts) highlight this gazettement as the formal confirmation of new ODM officials, with Oburu taking over the top role.

There have been some internal party dynamics and public statements from Oburu emphasizing party unity, discipline, and collective decisions (e.g., remarks that "no individual, however senior, is above the collective decisions of the party").

There also appear to be ongoing discussions or minor rifts within ODM (e.g., involving Secretary General Edwin Sifuna), but Oburu's position as leader remains affirmed through the official gazette and party processes.

This positions ODM ahead of the 2027 elections, with Oburu actively involved in coalition talks and party messaging.
