ODM NEC Shake-up where Edwin Sifuna emerged unscathed

ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) recently held a meeting in Mombasa, on February 11, 2026, amid heightened internal tensions in the Orange Democratic Movement following the passing of Raila Odinga and debates over the party's direction, including its stance on the 2025 UDA-ODM agreement and potential coalition talks.

The meeting involved leadership discussions and some changes to the party's structure. Notably, there was a shake-up or purge in the NEC, where certain members were removed or replaced:

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi was removed from his position in the NEC (and as Deputy National Organising Secretary), reportedly due to holding multiple party positions (he had been elected as Trans Nzoia ODM chairman), though he contested the process as flawed.

Other figures like Kipkorir Menjo and Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma were also reportedly removed from the NEC.

Replacements included figures like Paul Otuoma in some roles.

Despite speculation, intense lobbying (including calls from figures like Treasury CS John Mbadi for his ouster), and rumors of plans to remove Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General—often linked to his vocal criticism of broadening ties with UDA/Ruto, his leadership of a faction resisting full alignment, and his absence from parts of the meeting—the NEC resolved not to remove him from his position as ODM Secretary General.

Multiple sources, including party resolutions shared online and media reports, confirm that Sifuna was retained untouched in his SG role. This outcome appears to stem from concerns that ejecting him could deeply split the party (especially given his support base and the risk of alienating key factions), even as the meeting targeted some of his perceived allies in a more limited reshuffle.

The NEC also reportedly affirmed ODM's withdrawal from the Azimio la Umoja coalition amid separate disputes over Azimio's own leadership changes (e.g. appointments by Uhuru Kenyatta).

Overall, while the session saw targeted adjustments and signaled ongoing factional struggles (with potential future risks for figures like Godfrey Osotsi, James Orengo, or others in the Sifuna-aligned camp), Sifuna emerged unscathed in this particular NEC shake-up. The situation remains fluid in ODM's post-Raila transition.
