Ruto's ultimatum to Police after Gachagua attack in Church
President William Ruto has requested security officers to exercise utmost restraint at places of worship, especially amid rising political tensions in the country ahead of the 2027 polls.
He condemned the violence at a church service attended by his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, in Othaya, emphasizing that places of worship should remain apolitical and peaceful.
Ruto stated, "All arms of security must ensure our places of worship are shielded from unnecessary and retrogressive battles and politics".
The attack on Gachagua, who was forced to flee the church, has widened the rift between Ruto and mainstream churches, with the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) who have accused the police of violating the Constitution and desecrating places of worship by attacking worshippers.
"Let us not bring politics, hatred or chaos in churches. We want our churches to be a place of peace and seeking God," Ruto added.
The attack on Gachagua, which involved teargas and vandalism, has sparked widespread condemnation, with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordering a probe and vowing to bring perpetrators to book.
