This follows a recent Special National Delegates Convention by the main ODM wing, which ratified new leadership: Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as party leader, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga as national chairperson, and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir as deputy party leader. The Linda Mwananchi group has challenged aspects of this process, held its own "People's National Delegates Convention," faced police attempts to disrupt events  before taking its campaign to the Coast.
The Mombasa rally is part of a broader "Coast tour" and public engagement drive by the faction. 
Reports describe a strong turnout, with the team receiving a warm welcome, addressing crowds, and framing the event as defending Raila Odinga's legacy while pushing grassroots ("mwananchi") issues. 
Some attendees and speakers termed it one of the most successful rallies in the region in the wake of post-Raila-era events, with chants and messages targeting local leadership (including references to a "one term" for certain figures).
