Kenya Opposition faults President Ruto over failed EAC Leadership Role

Kenya opposition has criticized President William Ruto over his performance during Kenya's tenure as chair of the East African Community (EAC).

This appears to stem from recent statements, particularly from opposition figures like Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper Democratic Party leader), who described Ruto as "the worst EAC chairman since its formation."

Key points from the criticism include:

1. Claims that Ruto failed to effectively lead or unite the regional bloc during his chairmanship.

2. Accusations of partisanship, such as in handling conflicts like the Sudan crisis (or potentially the ongoing eastern DRC tensions involving M23 rebels, Rwanda, and the DRC).

3. Broader perceptions of diplomatic missteps that undermined Kenya's regional influence, including strained relations with some EAC partners (e.g., perceptions of interference in DRC affairs or failure to address provocative statements from leaders like Uganda's Yoweri Museveni on territorial claims).

These critiques tie into longer-standing opposition narratives portraying Ruto's leadership as flawed on multiple fronts—domestically (e.g., economic issues, corruption allegations) and regionally (e.g., setbacks in peacekeeping efforts like the now-withdrawn EAC Regional Force in DRC, or perceived favoritism in conflicts).

In response to similar opposition attacks labeling Kenya a "failed state" or questioning leadership broadly, President Ruto has dismissed such claims, arguing that any perceived failure is "in their minds" and highlighting economic progress (e.g., Kenya's ranking among Africa's larger economies).

This latest round of opposition fault-finding was highlighted in media reports and broadcasts like Citizen TV's weekend coverage and People Daily articles from early March 2026, amid ongoing political tensions ahead of future elections.

For context, Kenya assumed the rotating EAC chairmanship in late 2024 (with Ruto taking the role amid DRC's FĂ©lix Tshisekedi's reluctance or boycott issues), but the term has faced challenges from regional conflicts and internal EAC dynamics.

The opposition appears to be leveraging these to amplify calls against Ruto's overall governance.
