Rigathi Gachagua demands public inquest into unresolved High Profile deaths

 Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who is the Leader of Democracy for the Citizens Party has publicly demanded a public inquest into several high-profile deaths during President William Ruto’s administration, raising specific questions he says remain unanswered.

On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, during a national statement assessing the Kenya Kwanza government’s four years in office (delivered at DCP headquarters in Nairobi), Gachagua focused on the deaths of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga (October 2025 in India), former Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla (helicopter crash in 2024), and Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno (helicopter crash). 

He framed these as part of a broader pattern of unresolved high-profile cases and urged the Director of Public Prosecutions to use constitutional powers to establish a public inquest.

Key questions Gachagua raised on Raila Odinga’s death

He questioned medical care in the final hours, travel arrangements, lack of a post-mortem, and funeral details:

Why were Raila’s personal doctors denied access in his last hours, with doctors from Nairobi West Hospital (linked by Gachagua to Ruto) present instead?

Why were personal physicians’ advice against long-distance air travel allegedly ignored?

Why was he taken to India on a private jet, and who were the accompanying doctors (allegedly against his personal doctor’s wishes)?

Why was no post-mortem conducted?

How did burial arrangements (reportedly within 72 hours) align with Luo cultural traditions that Raila respected, and was Ruto involved as an executor of any will?

Raila died on October 15, 2025, aged 80, while receiving treatment in India.

On General Francis Ogolla

Gachagua said the government has not released a sufficient report on the military helicopter crash that killed the then-CDF in 2024. 

He asked President Ruto, as Commander-in-Chief, what he knows about the death and why Ogolla was allowed to travel in a Bell Huey helicopter that Gachagua described as having a “questionable mechanical status.” 

He stressed that Ogolla died on active duty and deserved full transparency.

On MP Johana Ng’eno

Gachagua referenced the helicopter crash that killed Ng’eno (and others) and raised claims about fueling: after dropping Ng’eno at Endebess, the aircraft refueled in Eldoret with fuel allegedly transported from Lodwar by a private vehicle. 

He questioned whether this fuel contributed to mechanical issues at altitude and called for Kenya Airports Authority (or relevant aviation authorities) to release CCTV footage from the facility that day. 

He also alleged prior political pressure/harassment related to Ng’eno’s community leadership ambitions.

Gachagua stated that Kenyans have asked him to demand answers on these and other high-profile questionable deaths over the past four years, emphasizing national accountability and public confidence. 

These are his public allegations and questions; they have not been independently verified in the reporting, and the government has not been shown issuing a detailed immediate response in the available coverage.

This comes amid ongoing political tension between Gachagua and the Ruto administration following Gachagua’s 2024 impeachment.
