Is Dr Mukhisa Kituyi the best Bet to Succeed Uhuru?

After months of speculations as to whether he would contest for presidency in Kenya, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi has finally made a reality and resigned from the lucrative secretary-general of the United Nations Convention on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), wading back into the murky waters of politics.
The former three-term Kimilili MP has a wealth of experience. Apart from being an MP and an international diplomat, Dr Kituyi also served as Trade and Industry Minister in the Kibaki government. He lost his parliamentary seat in 2007 to, then a political novice, Dr Eseli Simiyu. He later on unsuccessfully contested for Bungoma Senatorial seat in 2013, which he lost to Ford Kenya Party leader Moses Wetangula.
Mukhisa who is 65 years of age was appointed by former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as UNCTAD’s secretary-general on September 1, 2013. He was then reappointed for a second time in September 2017.
Dr Mukhisa Kituyi might succeed Uhuru Kenyatta as the president of Kenya.  It was once rumored that he 'is' the system’s secret card meant to defeat deputy president William Ruto. His credentials at UNCTAD is quite impressive and it was once reported that he helped most countries to reduce trade barriers through the pursuance of targeted financing and pay-offs.
As a UN envoy, he regularly warned Kenya not to pursue bilateral trade with United States, arguing that it would pose a risk to Kenya’s responsibilities in the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCRA).  AFCRA was formed by the African Union (AU) to expand trade among African nations.

He incorporated key opposition figures drawn from the ODM Party - a move that appeased the doyen of opposition Raila Amollo Odinga. Cabinet Secretaries drawn from ODM included: Hassan Ali Joho, Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, John Mbadi Ng'onga and James Opiyo Wandayi.
