Little Known Facts about Former UNCTAD Secretary-General, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi

Dr Mukhisa Kituyi was first cousin to the late former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa. His father, the late Jamin Kituyi was a brother to Wamalwa’s mother Esther Nekesa. Mukhisa grew up in a not so well-endowed family in Bungoma North Sub-county in a village called Mbakalo.
Mukhisa is married to Dr. Ling Kituyi, a Norwegian, and initially had four children namely Ivar Makari (deceased), Laila Kituyi, Sitati Kituyi and Thor Masalule. His eldest son Makari died of diabetes in 2015.
The former Kimilili legislature graduated with a BA degree in Political science at Makerere University, before he furthered his studies by undertaking a post-graduate course in Norway. He was expelled from Nairobi University before he sought educational asylum at Makerere.
When he was Trade and Industry Minister in Mwai Kibaki’s government, Dr. Kituyi chaired the Council of Ministers of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) for two years. He also chaired the Council of Ministers of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of States.
During the European-ACP Economic partnership accord, Mukhisa acted as the lead negotiator for trade ministers drawn from east and southern parts of Africa. After he was voted out of parliament, he was among the team of governance experts advising presidents of countries bound by the East African Community agreement.
Before he was picked for the powerful position of Secretary General at UNCTAD, Dr Kituyi was serving as the Chief Executive of the Kenya Institute of Governance that is based in Nairobi.
Mukhisa resigned from UNCTAD on February 2021 to contest as presidential candidate in 2022. His political foray might complicate President Uhuru Kenyatta’s succession equation. Kituyi is presenting himself as an alternative image to the bubbling animosity between the ‘hustlers’ and the ‘dynasties.’
Political pundits argue that Dr Mukhisa Kituyi might give both Raila and Ruto a run for their money. During his political stint, Mukhisa has never mentioned in any scam. While he was the Prime Minister, ODM leader Raila Odinga was linked to the ‘kazi kwa vijana’ scandal. Deputy President William Ruto has been adversely linked to numerous scandals which include the pipeline land scandal, Weston Hotel scandal, Arror and Kimwarer dam scandal.
