Apple CEO Tim Cook issued a stern warning on Thursday that algorithms are pushing society towards a disaster as a result of “rampant conspiracy theories and disinformation juiced by algorithms.” He was speaking at the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference where he noted that companies were asking what they could run away with rather than what should be followed to enhance the metrics.
Cook underpinned his argument to the US Capitol assault where he alluded that extremist gangs could be perpetuated through algorithms that recommend more users to join the group. He said that the best technology was measured on how it improves lives.
The Apple CEO argued that the future of innovation is largely determined by the magnitude in which it makes people lives better, more human and more fulfilled.
Mr Cook’s sentiment comes after Apple introduced a new privacy tool that enables the user to choose which apps have the ability to share tour data. The company is on the process of rolling out App Tracking Transparency Measures that has the ability to access advertising identifiers on Apple main operating system.
“If a business is built on misleading users, on data exploitation, on choices that are not choices at all, then it doesn’t deserve our praise, it deserves reform,” Mr. Cook said. He demanded an enactment of US Privacy law in a similar move like the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (EUGDPR).
