President Uhuru Kenyatta has edged out his deputy, William Ruto, out of the government-driven ‘Big 4’ agenda. Ruto was conspicuously absent when the president was meeting cabinet secretaries, principal secretaries and top government officials on Thursday to evaluate government development projects.
However, unconfirmed reports indicate that Ruto was not invited to the State House meeting. Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i was given the role of supervising government projects by President Kenyatta to the chagrin of DP Ruto.
The Head of State convened the meeting to deliberate on the Big 4 agenda and the Building bridges Initiative (BBI). Uhuru used the occasion to direct all state officers to ensure that public money was well utilized.
Uhuru’s meeting occurred at a time when county assemblies are still on process to endorse the BBI bill. So far, 11 counties have already approved the bill with one county rejecting it.
A message from State House Kenya stated that: “The President outlined to the officers his vision and priorities for this year, top among them the completion of ongoing government projects and programmes across all sectors and regions of the country.”
Cabinet secretaries have been traversing the country to assess the progress of government projects.
The statement that was posted by State House spokesperson, Kanze Dena, further revealed that “the Head of State directed officials to ensure prudent utilization of public resources in service delivery saying Kenyans must always get the highest return for their money.”
On his part, Ruto is not toning down his campaigns to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya's president.
