“Forever in our hearts” are the words that are conspicuously inscribed on Moi’s mausoleum at his Kabarak home. The mausoleum is supported by eight pillars signifying his 8 children. Daniel Arap Moi, who ruled Kenya for 24 uninterrupted years, died on February 4, 2020. Despite being a staunch Christian, his rule was characterized with numerous human rights abuses.
Arrests without trial, Political persecutions and assassinations characterized Moi’s 24-year stint at the helm of leadership. ODM leader Raila Odinga, former Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara and Siaya Senator James Orengo were among those who suffered the wrath of Nyayo iron-fisted rule.
Former President Daniel Arap Moi was the most feared personality during his tenure. Those who dared to cross his path were silenced. Since the 1982 aborted coup, Moi changed tune of leadership. He gradually morphed into a dictator who perceived opposition as crime.
Kenya’s democracy suffered the most when Moi introduced the ‘mulolongo’ system of elections. The system had many loopholes that facilitated massive rigging. Due to incessant pressure, Moi agreed to allow multiparty democracy in 1991. The constitutional amendments also set a presidential term limit.
During his presidency he used to receive security briefings every morning and would occasionally call all the provincial commissioners for security updates. According to those individuals who worked close to Moi, he was an early riser.
In his twilight days as Kenya’s president, Moi overtly asked for apology to any person he had wronged. Moi would later choose Uhuru Kenyatta as his apparent heir, something that surprised a number of his close friends.
He literally told his long-serving vice president Prof George Saitoti that politics and friendship were different as he defended his choice of Uhuru. Moi died at a time when Kenya was under the leadership of his political son, Uhuru Kenyatta.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, Former Vice President Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula and Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui were among the non-family leaders who graced Moi’s first anniversary at Kabarak. They joined Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and his brother who is Rongai MP Raymond Moi in commemorating the former president.
