As 2022 draws nigh, there is a series of high profile political machinations and maneuvers, mapping diverse ways to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta. The ground is swiftly changing and the pro-handshake politicians are drifting apart.
Just recently, Siaya Senator James Orengo disclosed that all was not well after alleging there was a plot by some top civil servants to alienate and isolate Raila Odinga. Orengo alleged that Uhuru allies were keener with succession politics than Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Kenyans should expect a new political ‘tsunami’ that might shake this country’s politics. The isolation of ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto might force them to combine efforts to countenance the ‘system’ proposed candidates.
The combination of Raila and Ruto might be lethal; though the president might derail their alliance before it comes into effect. This can be done by dismantling the BBI referendum which is likely to give Raila some renewed powers. Ruto is serving his last term as deputy president, and constitutionally he has hit the cap.
Constitutionally prohibited, Ruto cannot be Raila’s running mate. On the other hand, Raila cannot accept to be Ruto’s running mate. BBI is the only avenue for the two leaders to work together, as Raila might opt to become a Prime Minister and Ruto as a President or vice versa.
Kenyans should expect more drama in the coming days as political betrayals unfold. The launch of Okoa Kenya Alliance, which isolates Raila Odinga and William Ruto, is believed to have the blessings of the president.
Unsubstantiated reports indicate that Uhuru’s allies are pushing for a Musalia Mudavadi presidency. However, other sources indicate that the president might endorse former UNCTAD secretary general Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as his preferred heir-to-the-throne.
Last Saturday President Uhuru Kenyatta and Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi held a highly confidential meeting at State House. Details of the meeting are still scanty. However, there were unconfirmed reports that Uhuru pressed Dr. Kituyi to register his political party, so that he could be included in the caucus of party leaders.
The President later on hosted a delegation from Coast Province which was attended by governors Ali Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Salim Mvurya (Kwale) and Amason Kingi (Kilifi). The puzzle remains, who will succeed Uhuru as the president of Kenya? Will Uhuru's succesor be determined in a State House boardroom or will he be determined by the electorates?
