The Independent Election and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has begun preparations for 2022 general elections in Kenya. This comes in the wake of the appointment of 4 IEBC Commissioners by President Uhuru Kenyatta to replace the election officials who had resigned.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati held a consultative meeting with the media at Mombasa on Monday where he briefed the nation about his commission’s preparations. Chebukati confided the plans to guide IEBC operations.
The election plan has been put on the public domain. The commission chair stated that two-third gender rule will be adhered to. IEBC pledged to scrutinize Party’s nomination process to ensure the adherence of gender parity. The Constitution of Kenya prescribes that general elections should be held after every five years on the first Tuesday of August.
Chebukati pressed for more funding to finance the election preparations. He also told the media that they will be given access to the entire electoral process to ensure transparency and accountability.
The next General Elections will be conducted on 9th August 2022. Candidates for various political seats have already started campaigning amidst the raging Covid-19 global pandemic.
There have been calls to postpone the next elections due to Covid-19 crisis. However, a number of politicians are against such idea. Some countries, including USA, have hold elections defying the vagaries of global challenges.
Kenya’s presidential elections will be a hot issue as the incumbent will be exiting the national stage as his constitutional limit will have been exhausted in 2022. Deputy President William Ruto and Opposition Leader Raila Odinga are among the frontline presidential contenders.
Most governors will not be defending their gubernatorial seats for they are serving their last term as prescribed by law.
